What resources, services, infrastructure and events are available to help?

When you’ve kick-started your schools active travel journey there are lots of resources, services, infrastructure (e.g. road) possibilities and events that can help drive change. Some are provided by Cardiff Council who keen to make our city a better place to live by getting more people walking and cycling. Others are provided by excellent charities like Sustrans, PedalPower and Living Streets. Some you’ll be able to adopt yourself with some support. Here’s some good examples:

  • Training for pupils to become Junior Road Safety Officers (to help promote safety around school gates and sustainable, active travel)
  • The Streetwise initiative (classroom and practical training to prepare pupils for the safe transition to the high school journey)
  • Classroom and practical education from Road Safety and Training Officers covering bus use, walking and cycling safety, behaviour near roads and journey planning
  • National Standards Level 1 and Level 2 school children cycle training via Cardiff Council and Welsh Assembly Government funding (like the old “Cycling Proficiency”, aimed at safe cycling)
  • Go-Ride Cycling Skills (basic cycle skills instruction for leisure and competitive cycling)
  • Go Ride school cycling club set up
  • Adult cycle training
  • Learn to ride child holiday courses
  • Learn to ride 1-to-1 training for all ages and abilities
  • National school cycling and scooting events or competitions like the Sustrans “Big Pedal”
  • Adult events such as national “Cycle To Work Day”
  • 20 mph zones
  • Improvements in cycle lanes and cycle paths
  • Safe road crossing points
  • No-stopping vehicle zones
  • Reduced car parking regulations or implementing barriers to pavement parking
  • Traffic calming
  • A walking bus: A group of children, parents and/or volunteers walking to school at a set time and along the same route each day
  • Park and Stride: Park, or alight from public transport, a ten-minute walk or scoot away from school and complete the journey on foot
  • Walking Zones: A school defines an area around the school within which children and families are encouraged to walk rather than drive every day
  • Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs): Stop non-residents driving through areas surrounding schools at specific times
