Who are Cardiff Cycle City?
We’re Cardiff’s biggest and busiest cycle campaigning and advocacy group. We’re not a cycling club, although cycling clubs are great! Instead, we’re focused on “utility” cycling for everyday transport in and around Cardiff.
We describe ourselves as a “movement” with the primary aim of making Cardiff the best cycling city in the UK.
Founded in 2014, we are entirely voluntary and not-for-profit. We have a Committee, ‘members’, volunteers and followers. Our email subscribers and social media followers total many thousands.
What are we trying to achieve?
We promote and campaign for improved cycling facilities, infrastructure and safety in Cardiff. We want to see fewer barriers to cycling (e.g. cycle hangars, wayfinding, segregation, adult and child cycle training, integration with public transport, driving standards), behaviour change and significant ‘modal shift’ especially from private cars to active travel and public transport.
So what sort of things do we actually do?
No two years look alike at Cardiff Cycle City. Since our inception we’ve been involved in a huge range of activities. Here’s just a flavour of our activities:
- Representing our followers at Cardiff Council and Welsh Government transport meetings
- Cycling infrastructure design and consultation feedback
- Hosting talks (Cardiff Council, AMs, South Wales Police, GoSafe Cymru, TfW, cycling authors)
- Active social media (info and advocacy) and website content (e.g. Cardiff A-Z and Schools guide)
- Outreach events
- Schools active travel
- Input to Welsh Gov’s ‘Active Travel for schools Toolkit’
- Support ‘Bike Week’ with Cycling UK
- The annual(-ish) Cardiff “Commute Challenge”
- Pre-election Cycle hustings
- Campaigning for physical barrier removal on active travel routes
- Harnessing input to Cardiff Council’s ‘Active Travel Network Map’ plan
