Senedd Election 2021 Cycling Hustings

Wales will go to the polls on May 6th to elect a new government. That government will face huge challenges, not least because of Covid. We all know that getting more people to use bikes instead of cars for their everyday journeys can make a major contribution to Wales’ health, environment and general well being. But do the politicians?

If we are to fulfil our ambition of making Cardiff the best city for cycling in the UK, we need to take every opportunity to hammer the message home.

Whilst it is Cardiff Council that provides cycling facilities in our city, the vast majority of the funding comes from Welsh Government. Cardiff Cycle City has been campaigning hard to influence Welsh Government and the Senedd.

We took the lead in organising the Cycle on the Senedd events to demand more funding; we’ve been involved in developing the Senedd Cross Party Group on the Active Travel Act’s Manifesto for Active Travel.

Now that we’re heading into the elections Cardiff Cycle City wants to ensure that our supporters have the opportunity to quiz the potential new Senedd members for our city on their policies for enhancing cycling in Cardiff.

Cycle Hustings

With this in mind we organised a special hustings on Monday 19th April to hear representatives of the leading parties set out their policies on cycling, with an opportunity to quiz them on the details.

The event was held via Zoom and was recorded. For those of you who couldn’t attend you can watch the entire event, including questions, using the player below.

  1. Attention needs to be drawn to the unbelievable stupid decision by Transport for Wales to abandon bike reservation on all trains either starting or terminating in Wales. This precludes any holiday journey by bike.
