Cycling Updates and Christmas Party 2019!

Its that time of year again where we get together to celebrate another year of cycling in Cardiff. This year we planned a fun Christmas-themed evening social with a Bike Ride, Quiz and of course our Annual General Meeting.

Blinged Bikes

Blinged Bike Ride

We met outside the Woodville Pub on Woodville Road at 5.30pm – there were some amazing creations, including a Santa’s Sleigh bike trailer! We celebrated the best present Cardiff cyclists have had this year by riding on the new Senghennydd Road cycleway at 5:45, ending up at Ride my Bike Cafe.

Annual General Meeting

Before being too distracted by the merriment of the party we held our official AGM, the minutes of which can be found here.

Cardiff Cycle City is a not-for-proft community group that only runs due to the dedication and hard work of our committee and volunteers. If you want to get involved, particularly if you have skills or experience that can help us promote our message, please get in touch. We have monthly public meetings and all are welcome!

Cycling Update from Cardiff Council

Cllr Caro Wild

Attending our party was one of our founding members, Caro Wild, who now holds the post of Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning & Transport at Cardiff Council. Caro was very keen to share some brief updates from last year, plus some exciting news for the upcoming year.

Since Cardiff Cycle City was formed in 2014 cycling in Cardiff has more than doubled, now at 15% of everyday journeys, indicating that there is a real demand for cycling, and an opportunity to further increase numbers once the new cycleways are completed.

The Council are releasing a White Paper on the 15 January 2020, with some radical proposals regarding transport within Cardiff. Part of this is with the aim of addressing the issues of pollution and congestion that blight the City on a daily basis. Caro urged us to scrutinise the White Paper once it’s released and respond with our views.

Finally, work will commence on the City Centre Cycleways in March, as outlined in the Clean Air feasibility study HERE. It’s uncertain when the work will be complete, but the main aim of this scheme is to bring the centre into Air Quality compliance by 2021. There’s no question that this is a big shift away from the usual motor-centric prioritising, and we’ll be watching developments closely.

The winning team!

Our Spectacular Quiz

The highlight of the night was our fiendish quiz, superbly put together by quizmaster Meryl James. Wits were pitted against other bike riders for the chance to win some exclusive prizes. Seven gruelling rounds saw a victor emerge to claim the coveted trophy and bragging rights for the next twelve months!

New Year, New Day

Don’t forget that in 2020 our regular meeting day changes from the last Wednesday to the last Thursday of every month. So the January meeting, which will be a business meeting, will be on Thursday January 30th. Our February meeting should be especially interesting, details to follow.

And finally – we hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year! From everybody at Cardiff Cycle City.
